How NAD Depletion Causes a Unique Type of Cell Death in Animals

Some proteins can help control immune responses in both plants and bacteria. In people, a protein called SARM1 helps break down NAD, which is important for cell energy and can lead to cell death after an injury. This study shows that SARM1 and another protein, TirS, use this ability to lower immune responses and cause a type of cell death that is different from normal cell death.

This study in the Democratic Republic of the Congo shows that when hospitals have good power, fewer patients die, and more people visit the hospital. Electricity helps hospitals work better and keep people alive.
