A New Weapon Against Cancer: Palladium MOFs Target Tumor Growth and Inflammation

A team of researchers has designed a novel one-dimensional palladium-based metal-organic framework (1D Pd-MOF) that shows potential as a dual-action agent: incapacitating cancer cells while dampening harmful inflammation. Moreover, it triggers programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancer cells and reduces nitric oxide production related to inflammation. While still at the early experimental stage, these findings open doors for future drug development with refined targeting capabilities.

Sleep Solutions for Shift Workers: Can Online Counseling Help?

Having spent summers doing shift work, it’s not great!

Shift work often disrupts natural sleep patterns, increasing risks of insomnia and depression. A new study tested an anonymous, personalized online cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) counseling program tailored for shift workers across various industries. Participants received four weeks of tailored advice and tracked their sleep, compared to a control group that only completed sleep diaries. Surprisingly, both groups showed significant improvements in sleep efficiency and insomnia symptoms, but the counseling did not outperform self-monitoring sleep alone. This suggests that simply paying attention to sleep patterns might have a therapeutic effect—a hopeful take for those seeking easy, accessible interventions. While the study couldn’t pinpoint a superior effect of the counseling over diary-keeping, it underscores the potential of low-barrier, scalable online programs and highlights the importance of further research to optimize support for shift workers’ sleep health.
