Theoretical capability describes the shoes, while observed exposure reflects running without them. Similarly, AI’s theoretical potential is boundless, yet practical usage trails behind. For tasks like coding, AI’s impact is notable. However, in physical fields like agriculture, or roles that require a human touch, such as counseling, its influence wanes.

 This discrepancy is essential. If AI isn’t yet achieving its potential in many domains, there’s a broader scope for economies like those in developing countries to prepare. By understanding which tasks and roles are at risk, workers, policymakers, and businesses can take informed measures.

The Research Unveiled

 In this study, the researchers paint a nuanced picture. They exploited datasets such as the O*NET database, Eloundou et al.’s theoretical capability measures, and AI usage metrics. This approach reveals that roles highly exposed to AI, like computer programming, might not grow as robustly as predicted.

Yet, intriguingly, older, well-educated individuals occupy many of these positions. So why hasn’t there been an uptick in joblessness? The answer may lie in how companies manage their workforces amidst AI’s advancement, suggesting systemic resilience rather than immediate displacement.

Peeking into the Future

Projected growth, as seen through this AI lens, tells us it’s not all doom and gloom. Lower exposure roles continue to thrive. This means that jobs deeply rooted in human experience, or those adapting AI as a tool rather than a replacement, will remain strong.
